CHAPTER - II

 

Introduction

In the previous chapter, we have seen that there are forty nine single long sounds in Tamil language having their own unique meaning. The list is given below.

Long vowel set: aa (), ee (), oo (), ae (), ai (), oa (), ou ().

Long Compound Set: Kaa (கா), koo (கூ), kai (கை), koa (கோ), kou (கௌ), caa (சா), cee (சீ), coo (சூ), cae (சே), coa (சோ), cou (சௌ), thaa (தா), thee (தீ), thoo (தூ), thae (தே), thai (தை), thou (தௌ), paa (பா), pee (பீ), poo (பூ), pae (பே), pai (பை), poa (போ), naa (நா), nee (நீ), noo (நூ), nae (நே), nai (நை), noa (நோ), nou (நௌ), maa (மா), mee (மீ), moo (மூ), mae (மே), mai (மை), moa (மோ), yaa (யா), vaa (வா), vee (வீ), vae (வே), vai (வை), vou (வௌ).

In this chapter, we will see how the meanings of above unique sets of long sounds of Tamil language are related to the Cavemen’s hunting profession.

Word: aa ()

This word has several meanings including Wild Cow in Tamil. Probably this could be the first long sound composed by the Cavemen. Cavemen might have started their hunting profession by hunting wild cow first. Because this animal is not so swift like deer, due to which it can be easily hunted by the cavemen. In addition to this, a wild cow’s flesh can feed a large number of cavemen. Cavemen might have used this word to notify the presence of a wild cow in their vicinity.

Word: ee (ஈ)

This word has several meanings including cutting and dividing in Tamil. After hunting the animal, it has to be cut and divided among the cavemen who were all involved in hunting the animal. Cavemen might have used this word to refer to the cutting and dividing of the hunted animal among them.

Word: oo (ஊ)

This word has the meaning of cut flesh in Tamil. After hunting the animal, it was cut and divided among the cavemen. Each cavemen got a share of cut flesh and they noted it as oo.

Word: ae (ஏ)

This word has several meanings including an arrow and throwing in Tamil. Cavemen used handy stone tools sharply pointed like an arrow and threw the same on the prey during hunting to kill it. Cavemen might have used this word to notify throwing of this hunting tool.

Word: ai (ஐ)

This word has several meanings including Head / Leader of a group in Tamil. We have seen earlier that cavemen formed several groups among them to do hunting profession efficiently. Each group had a leader among them and all the other of that group had to obey the orders of that leader. Cavemen used this word to refer to the leader of the group.

Word: oa (ஓ)

This word has the meaning of separation in Tamil. While starting hunting, two or more animals in a group may get frightened and may run together to escape. Cavemen might have used this word to refer to the separation of a particular animal from the group so that it can be chased and hunted.

Word: ou (ஔ)

This word has the meaning of they in Tamil. Cavemen might have used this word to notify the hunters of other group. For example, ou koo means to call the other group.

Word: kaa (கா)

This word has several meanings including carrying and carrying pole in Tamil. After hunting an animal, the prey has to be carried over to the dwelling place of the hunters. Cavemen used a long and stout wood as a carrying pole and used this word to refer to the pole.

Word: koo (கூ)

This word has several meanings including calling in Tamil. Probably, this should be the most common word used by the Cavemen. Because, cavemen had to call the other men of their own group as well as of other group frequently for assistance and discussion. Cavemen, at first, might not have named the members. Simply, if the head pronounced koo in a group, all the others of that group should turn towards and pay attention to the head, after which the head would point out the particular man by his finger.

Word: kai (கை)

This word has several meanings including hand, assistance, pointing in Tamil. Cavemen might have used this word to refer to their hands, assistants and pointing out action.

Word: koa (கோ)

This word has several meanings including bull and eye in Tamil. Cavemen might have used this word to notify the presence of a Bull in their vicinity as well as to have an eye over the prey. 

Word: kou (கௌ)

This word has several meanings including the meanings of eating and biting in Tamil. Presently, this word is also used in the form of kav. Cavemen might have used this word to refer to eating of flesh or any other food as well as biting.

Word: caa (சா)

This word has the meaning of death in Tamil. Cavemen might have used this word to refer to the deceased man as well as death of their member during hunting. 

Word: cee (சீ)

This word has several meanings including sharpening in Tamil. Cavemen might have used this word to refer to sharpening of their hunting tools, which became blunt due to frequent usage.

Word: coo (சூ)

This word has several meanings including setting on to chase in Tamil. Cavemen might have used this word to set the members of their group to chase the particular animal.

Word: cae (சே)

This word has several meanings including dwelling or staying in Tamil. Cavemen might have used this word to refer to the staying i.e. waiting for hunting, which otherwise would lead to failure.

Word: coa (சோ)

This word has the meaning of fort in Tamil. Cavemen might have used this word to surround the prey animal like a fort, giving no chance for the animal to escape from them.

Word: cou (சௌ)

This word has the meanings of skin, membrane in Tamil. Cavemen might have used this word to refer to the skin / membrane removed from the animal hunted by them. Presently, this word is also used in the form of cav.

Word: thaa (தா)

This word has several meanings including the meanings of giving and attacking in Tamil. Cavemen might have used this word to refer to giving of food etc. to others as well as attacking the prey animals during hunting.

Word: thee (தீ)

This word has the meaning of fire in Tamil. Cavemen might have used this word to refer to fire of any kind i.e. natural forest fire or fire produced by them.

Word: thoo (தூ)

This word has several meanings including the meaning of full flesh in Tamil. Cavemen might have used this word to refer to the full body flesh of the animal hunted by them, whose skin was removed but not cut or divided.

Word: thae (தே)

This word has several meanings including the meaning of grasping or catching in Tamil. Cavemen might have used this word to refer to the catching of the prey animal after it was attacked and still the prey was trying to escape from them.

Word: thai (தை)

This word has several meanings including the meaning of piercing and joining in Tamil. Cavemen might have used this word to refer to the piercing and joining of animal flesh cuts in a long stick.

Word: thou (தௌ)

This word has several meanings including the meaning of failure in Tamil. Not all the trials made by the Cavemen for hunting would have resulted in success. Ofcourse, there might have resulted several failures during hunting and cavemen might have used this word to refer to such failures. Presently this word is also used in the form of thav.

Word: paa (பா)

This word has several meanings including the meanings of shadow and protection in Tamil. Cavemen might have used this word to refer to hiding of their team members from the vision of the prey animal behind any bush or tree.

Word: pee (பீ)

This word has several meanings including the meaning of faeces in Tamil. Cavemen might have used this word to refer to the faeces in common and particularly that of dangerous animals like elephant, lion, tiger etc. to avoid nearing them.

Word: poo (பூ)

This word has several meanings including the meaning of appearing in Tamil. Cavemen might have used this word to refer to the coming out of team members from their hiding places.

Word: pae (பே)

This word has several meanings including the meanings of fear, alarm in Tamil. Cavemen might have used this word to alarm the other members of their hunting group about the proximity of dangerous animals like lion, tiger, elephant etc. on their way.

Word: pai (பை)

This word has several meanings including the meaning of snake hood in Tamil. Cavemen might have used this word to notify about the presence of snakes from their withered skins found on the forest ground. Snake biting might have been referred as pai kou by the cavemen.

Word: poa (போ)

This word has several meanings including the meaning of proceeding in Tamil. Cavemen might have used this word to refer to the proceeding of their team members for hunting.
